Tradewater statement
on EPA Request regarding halon-1301 destruction
- October 10, 2025
Tradewater recently received a request from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regarding the destruction of Halon-1301. We take this request seriously and are cooperating fully to provide all requested information. Our mission is to deliver climate solutions that address urgent environmental challenges while upholding the highest standards of integrity and transparency.
Halon-1301 is one of the most potent ozone-depleting greenhouse gases—over 7,000 times more harmful than carbon dioxide (CO₂). Although its production was banned nearly 35 years ago under the Montreal Protocol, there is still no requirement or funding for its safe disposal once it is no longer needed—a critical step to prevent halons from leaking into the atmosphere. As a result, significant quantities of legacy halons remain in storage worldwide, often leaking or vented to avoid maintenance costs.
Tradewater has completed two carbon offset projects to permanently destroy excess Halon-1301 at the end of its useful life. We partnered with owners committed to responsible environmental management to ensure the retired halon would never be released into the atmosphere.
The projects followed the ACR’s methodology for the destruction of ozone-depleting substances, developed and approved through a public process that included expert and EPA review. Tradewater fully complied with all applicable U.S. laws and regulations, including the Clean Air Act. The EPA has requested information through a Rule 114 Letter but has not alleged any violation of law.
We share the EPA’s commitment to ensuring that necessary Halon-1301 supplies remain available for critical uses until less polluting alternatives are available. We are also committed to responsibly managing excess materials to prevent future climate damage and protect the ozone layer.
