Why Carbon Credits are Critical
At Tradewater, we believe that carbon offset credits play a crucial role in the fight against catastrophic climate change. High-quality offsets that represent real, verifiable emission reductions buy us time to transition to a low-carbon economy and drive investment into important emission reduction work that would not be addressed in any other way.
Our carbon offset projects are guided by a single principle: to have the greatest possible impact.
Impact is why we target the urgent threat of particular gases – specifically, refrigerants and methane – that are accelerating climate change. These “non-CO2” gases have an outsized effect on global warming, and refrigerants and halons also deplete the ozone layer. Without doing something about these potent greenhouse gases, it will be impossible to restrict global warming to the targets set by the Paris Agreement. We have already made a substantial impact by destroying over 10 million tons of CO2equivalent, and our goal is to expand this to 30 million tons by 2030.
Impact is also why everything we do, and how we do it, is designed to build trust with our customers, staff, and community – trust that the projects we develop create real and meaningful climate benefits, and trust that every single carbon offset credit we generate represents an additional, accurate, and permanent emissions reduction.
If you want to learn more about or carbon credits we invite you to read our white paper on carbon offset quality.
What does this mean?
- Additional: Our carbon offset projects seek out and eliminate greenhouse gases from sources that nobody else is addressing, where there is no requirement or mandate to do so, and that would not be possible without the sale of our carbon offset credits, which provides the necessary financing.
- Accurate: Our carbon credits are based on conservative measurements taken from physical samples of greenhouse gases that we collect.
- Permanent: Our projects either permanently destroy or permanently control greenhouse gases by plugging leaking sources.

This is our pledge to you:
We will hold ourselves and our projects to the highest standards. We will not exaggerate our environmental impact, nor claim emission reductions that might be undone in the future. We will never double-count our work. We will only deliver carbon offset credits that represent additional, accurate, and permanent emission reductions. Real reductions. Impactful reductions. Because anything less only cheats ourselves and the planet.
Together, we can prevent catastrophic climate change. Join us.
